Project Rationale:

The teaching methods of teachers in Indonesian classroom need to be improved. The Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia has urged teachers to reformed their teaching method. The call for reformation in teaching is a respond to the low achievement of Indonesian students on International and also national learning assessment.

The project will address to the core problems of teachers teaching and it is expected to improve the teachers competencies, teacher's teaching practice and in turn students learning achievement.

Project Description:

The project proposed is Workshop on Science, Teachnology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) teaching approach to Mathematics and Science Teachers in Yogyakarta and Central Java.

Currently, a team composed of lecturers  from Universitas Sanata Dharma in Yogyakarta and Deakin University in Mel;bourne is carrying out joint research on the implementation of STEM approach in Junior High Schools. The research involving teachers form Yogyakarta and Melbourne. The research implemented Research and Development methods to find the most effective way to implement STEM approach based on the real context. The research is jointly funded by Ministry of Research, Techonolgy and Higher Education of Indonesia and Deakin University.

The research has demonstrated that STEM approach could improve studenst learning and students learning achievements.

The workshop will invite one science teacher, one mathematics teacher from Melbourne and one teaching staff from Deakin university to share their experiences in implementing STEM approach in schools.

The participants of the workshop composed of two group of teachers: first is a group of teachers who have involved in the reserach and the second is a group of teachers who do not involved in the STEM research.

By doing this workshop, the teachers are expected to be ready to implement STEM approach in their schools. Therefore the there will be more science and mathematics teachers to implement STEM approach.
