2023 Australian Alumni Gala Dinner in Makassar Celebrating 70 years of Australian Scholarships in eastern Indonesia
Celebrating 70 years of Australian Scholarships in Indonesia, Australian Consul-General in Makassar Bronwyn Robbins hosted the Australian Alumni Gala Dinner for eastern Indonesia in Makassar on 10 June.
More than 220 Indonesian graduates from Australian universities gathered to mark 70 years since the first cohort of Colombo Plan scholarship recipients from Indonesia arrived in Australia.
Australia's scholarship program, now called the Australia Awards, is the longest-running foreign scholarship program in Indonesia. For seven decades, Australia has partnered with Indonesia to invest in human capital development, respond to social and economic development priorities, and create and maintain enduring ties between Australia and Indonesia.
“Australia is proud and privileged to have played a part in the journey of our alumni, many of whom are now leaders in government, business, academia and civil society in Indonesia. We are honoured to have Bupati, university rectors, and Bank Indonesia Directors among our distinguished alumni”, said Consul-General Robbins.
This year’s Gala Dinner featured Australian alumni MCs Valerina Daniel, performances by Endah & Rhesa and Dian Mega Safitri, as well as a number of photo exhibitions.
As part of the year-long campaign to celebrate this milestone, the Australian Embassy and Consulates-General in Indonesia are hosting gala dinners and other exciting events across Indonesia.
Since those first Colombo Plan scholars left Indonesia for Australia in 1953, we have continued to strengthen our cooperation through education – building connections and friendship, and harnessing opportunities that benefit both Indonesia and Australia. Australian alumni are helping to shape the future of Indonesia, contributing to the diversity and dynamism that defines modern Indonesia,” said Consul-General in Makassar Bronwyn Robbins.
Australia is one of the most popular overseas study destinations for Indonesian students, with around 20,000 enrolments each year. Australia has more than 200,000 alumni in Indonesia, including senior government and business leaders. Alumni are crucial in deepening cooperation between Australia and Indonesia to advance mutual security and prosperity.
