Championing Inclusion: Indonesian #OzAlum Join Forces for Gender Equality and Inclusion in Climate Action at the 2024 GEDSI Summit

We are proud to see our #OzAlum actively contributing to addressing gender equality, disability, and social inclusion (GEDSI) in climate action, collaborating with fellow Australian alumni across the Indo Pacific region.

Over 150 alumni from across the region gathered in Manila, Philippines, for the 2nd Regional #GEDSIAlumni Leadership Summit on 9-10 September 2024, hosted by the Australia Awards and Alumni Engagement Program – Philippines (AAAEP-P). This year’s theme, “GEDSI-liency: A Collaborative Journey towards Inclusive Climate Action,” featured inspiring talks from GEDSI champions and insightful learning trips to alumni-led initiatives across the region.

We are excited to highlight the contributions of Indonesian #OzAlum delegates :

  • Mr Surya Rahman Muhammad, Executive Director of Humanitarian Forum Indonesia, spoke on the Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience Panel Forum.
  • Ms Lusia Palulungan, Program Manager at INKLUSI (the Australia-Indonesia Partnership Program Towards an Inclusive Society), shared insights on Women's Leadership and Empowerment.
  • Mr Fandy Dawenan, Chair of Pertuni (the Indonesian Association for the Visually Impaired) in Southwest Papua Province, discussed Technology as a Tool for Disability Inclusion.
  • Dr Emilia Yustiningrum, Acting Head of the Research Center at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), contributed to Inclusive Disaster Risk Reduction and Resilience Knowledge Sharing.
  • Ms Hasrina Muliawan, Accountability and Learning Officer at SIAP SIAGA (the Australia-Indonesia Partnership for Disaster Risk Management), engaged in cultural sharing.

The Summit also featured a Social Impact Exhibit showcasing best practices in inclusion and resilience. Highlights from Indonesian enterprises and projects included:

  • Ms Saur Manurung, Director of Sokola Rimba, showcased the Sokola Tengger program, which educates children from the Tengger Tribe in East Java.
  • Ms Lusia Efriani Kiroyan, Founder of the Cinderella Foundation for Indonesia, showcased her Batik Girl Project and Batik Girl Animation Series (Ficusia) to empower women prisoners and promote drug prevention.

A special shoutout to Ms. Hana Septiana, News Correspondent at TEMPO and Secretary of the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) Surabaya. She found the summit invaluable for networking and gaining new insights, which she plans to utilise to shape future GEDSI projects at Radio Braille Surabaya and learnings to shape future GEDSI projects at Radio Braille Surabaya.
