This lecture will explore the implications of the glass ceiling not only for women but also for businesses, the economy, and society as a whole. The session will examine the ‘invisible’ obstacles that contribute to the glass ceiling effect, preventing women from undertaking leadership roles in significant numbers. These obstacles include penalties for taking time off work, conscious and unconscious biases within workplaces, and organisational culture and structure. The presentation will also explore potential solutions that can be designed and implemented by various stakeholders, including businesses, government bodies, lawmakers, and society, with a sensitivity to intersectional identities such as race, class, and sexuality.
