Pioneering Water Utility Solutions: Indonesian Professionals Gain Insights in Australia

Twenty-five professionals from Indonesia's national and local governments, utility finance sectors, financial institutions, and city and district associations have successfully completed their in-Australia program as part of the Australia Awards Short Course on Water Utility Regulatory Approaches. Run by Griffith University, this two-week program offered a unique opportunity to delve into the intricacies of water management. Participants explored the roles of independent regulatory commissions in tariff structuring and utility performance monitoring while also networking with Australian government agencies, water utilities, and sector experts during visits to Brisbane and Sydney.

The program included practical experience at the Malabar Wastewater Treatment Plant, where participants examined irrigation systems and their operational impacts. They visited Sutton and Koala Farms, where they learned about irrigation systems, seedling growth, and cropping operations. Participants also attended a Masterclass focused on innovative finance, sustainable asset planning, and economic regulation—key elements that will drive the transformation of Indonesia’s water sector. Panel discussions with representatives from the Queensland State Government and Queensland Water Directorate further enriched their understanding of the regulatory landscape.

Armed with these valuable insights from Australia, we look forward to the positive contributions these professionals will bring to improving water utility regulations across Indonesia.
