How can cities become cooler and fairer as rising temperatures increasingly affect urban communities?

Join our online guest lecture, ‘Cooler and Fairer Cities: Heat Mitigation, Adaptation and Inclusive Urban Greening’, presented by Professor Mat Santamouris from the University of New South Wales and Professor Jason Byrne from the University of Tasmania, on Friday, 11 September 2026, from 2:00pm to 4:00pm (Jakarta time).

Cities worldwide are facing the combined challenges of rising temperatures, climate change, rapid urbanisation and growing social inequality. As urban heat increasingly threatens public health, liveability and sustainability, there is an urgent need for innovative and equitable solutions.

In this joint public lecture, the speakers will explore how cities can adapt to a warming future. Drawing on the latest research and real-world examples, they will examine the causes and impacts of urban overheating, showcase emerging technologies and nature-based solutions for cooling cities and discuss how urban greening can improve resilience, health and wellbeing.

The lecture will also highlight the importance of ensuring that the benefits of climate adaptation are shared fairly across communities. Bringing together technological innovation, inclusive planning, and environmental justice perspectives, the speakers will explore pathways to creating cooler, greener, healthier, and more equitable cities for all.
