Sector: Disability Services
Project Rationale:
The COVID-19 pandemic has forced school closures across Indonesia, meaning most students, including students with disabilities, are learning at home with the help of parents and teachers. But not all parents have appropriate knowledge and skills to assist children to learn, which can lead to the decline of learning outcomes. Australia-Indonesia Disability Research and Advocacy Network – AIDRAN (2020) reports that 33% of children with disabilities experience decreased learning performance while learning at home.
Moreover, around 66% of parents of children with disabilities complain that home-based education is considered a hassle for them (Munawir Yusuf, 2020). They felt poor communication with the teacher and overwhelmed by their new role. The parents called for more support from the teachers rather than instructions. Thus, the teachers need to change their approach into collaboration with parents and they must support each other in the new endeavour. if we can proactively engage parents in the learning process, we can improve our parent-teacher relationships and more importantly, improve our children's learning, development and overall wellbeing (Cathy Quinn, 2020).
SLB Negeri 1 Badung and SLB Negeri 1 Denpasar are two schools in Bali that have issues in building cooperation with parents. During the pandemic, teachers experienced challenges in communicating effectively and involving parents actively in learning. Parents feel additional burden in daily learning at home and demand more support from the teachers in providing quality lessons for their children.
