Becoming Financial Champions: Growing Financial Literacy in Maluku Province

Collaborating Organisations: Heka Leka Foundation, a non-profit organisation which is active in improving education in eastern provinces. Heka Leka's role in the project will be to support the teachers workshops in remote islands in Maluku province.

Project Objective :

To deliver financial literacy workshops for teachers so they can provide financial literacy programs at their own schools.

Project Description:

The project Menjadi Jagoan Finansial (Becoming Financial Champions) is a program to empower teachers and students in Maluku province. By joining the workshops, teachers will learn basic knowledge essential for them to manage their own money. While the teachers gain knowledge, they are also equipped with skills to recreate the financial training and apply the workshop to their students. The workshop is not only expected to improve the teachers' financial wellbeing, but also to help financial ability “go viral” among students at their schools. The teachers are encouraged to set up their own financial literacy programs at the level of their students. Concepts to be introduced will include: Earning, Saving, Spending, Sharing.

Teachers and schools are also encouraged to share their financial school projects via a website Quamma.org. To boost interest in the project, a Festival Menjadi Jagoan Finansial / Financial Champion Festival will be held where teachers can meet and share their stories. This way we can maintain the program and avoid this becoming a one-off program.

The main program will be a three to five-day workshop series.

  • Day 1 - Training of Trainers. A workshop for a minimum 25 trainers who will carry out the program for the year.
  • Day 2 to Day 5 - Training for Teachers by the Trainers who participated in Day 1. Workshops for a minimum of 10 teachers, targeting 1-2 schools per day.

Trainers and project managers will follow up the teachers on all financial programs they set up in their schools. To reward the teachers and schools, a Festival Jagoan Finansial / Financial Champion Festival will be held annually to celebrate their achievements.

  • Around 100 Financial Champion teachers from 10 different schools in Ambon and surrounding areas in Maluku province

Relevant Facts:

Indonesia's growing middle class has rising income. However, this is not followed through with increasing financial knowledge, creating negative impacts like irresponsible spending and irresponsible borrowing. Such problems will have long-term effects on the country's economic growth. Better financial literacy is key to building a stronger generation of Indonesians.
