14 Dec 2020
Project leader: Mr. Umbu Reku Raya
Level of education and university: PhD, The Australian National University
Collaborating Organisations: Universitas Kristen Wira Wacana Sumba
Project Location: Nusa Tenggara Timur
Activity Type: Public awareness campaign
Sector: Public administration, Public sector reform
Project Rationale:
I studied the discrimination against the indigenous-slave caste in Sumba as part of my PhD thesis at The Australian National University and found that most of the slave caste is still under some sort of bondage. The caste gap in development outcomes in Sumba is the highest compared to Bali and India castes. Most recently, there are incidents of selling of slaves to high government officials in the Island. There is no public awareness campaign concerning the slavery practice yet. The slavery is masked under indigenous wisdom or practices.
Project Beneficiaries:
50 youths-university students, 10 ada communities and 10 CSOs in Central and East Sumba.
Priority Development Area:
An inclusive society through effective governance
