MIKA (Visual Communication Media for Children) Software Application for Supporting Communication Learning for Children with Autism and Communication Handicapped children in Jawa Timur and NTT

Project Objective :

  1. To develop a visual support software application “MIKA” for supporting communication learning for children with ASD and and communication handicapped children.

  2. To promote and conduct sharing of knowledge for the use of the software application “MIKA” to about 300 teachers and therapist from inclusive schools, and resource centers for children with autism and communication handicapped children from East Nusa Tenggara and East Java.

Project Description:

This project is aimed to develop a visual support software application “MIKA” for supporting communication learning for children with ASD and and communication handicapped children. Furthermore, MIKA will be promoted and shared, particularly on the knowledge and skills to use MIKA to inclusive schools and resource centers for children with autism and communication handicapped children.

Most importantly, this project targets the sharing of this high technology approach to the eastern part of Indonesia, such as: East Nusa Tenggara, which is one of the important targets of development areas in Indonesia. This project could accelerate the development of inclusive society in the eastern part of Indonesia. In addition, strengthening the East Java province for developing inclusive education is also a great importance, because Faculty of Psychology Universitas Airlangga and Forum Peduli Autisme Jawa Timur can work as the motor for creating a more effective and efficient intervention approach for children with ASD.

This project also addresses the development of an inclusive society through effective governance. The aim could be attained by working collaboratively with the Education offices (Dinas Pendidikan Propinsi) from East Java and East Nusa Tenggara. By this approach, this project can reach for more teachers, therapists and professionals, especially for extending training on how to use the application in an autism intervention context. In the future, it is expected that this application can be used in all parts of Indonesia.

Project Beneficiaries:

  1. 300 teachers from Inclusive schools and therapists from resource centers in Indonesia. Especially targeted in East Java and East Nusa Tenggara provinces (see atachment for the direct beneficiaries).

  2. Indirect beneficiaries: 500 children (with autism and communication handicapped) from East Java and East Nusa Tenggara provinces (see atachment for the direct beneficiaries).
