Are you interested in learning the hidden narratives of sports and fandom in the exceptionally sports-obsessed city? Join our online lecture titled "The Hidden Narratives of Sport and Fandom in Melbourne" on Friday, 16 June 2023, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm Jakarta time and gain insight from Dr Elena Balcaite from the University of Melbourne.
Melbourne is renowned for its world-class sporting infrastructure and collective passion for the sport. Emotional whirlwinds and the inevitable suffering that the fluctuating fortunes of sports teams and athletes bring to fans’ lives are familiar to all yet remain inexplicable to many. Pleasure seekers, socialised agents, and members of tribes and subcultures – are some of the labels ascribed to sports fans in various studies tied up with their own disciplinary norms and fixed theoretical devices. But what experiences of sports fandom are side-lined by this image of the city?
The lecture will navigate through individual narratives of Melbourne-based sports fans to disrupt the dominant representations of Melbourne’s sports culture.
The e-certificate for participation is available. If you want to attend this event, RSVP at this link by Wednesday, 14 June. Click here for more information about the online lecture and Dr Elena Balcaite.
