In celebration of International Coffee Day, the Australian Consulate-General in Makassar hosted an engaging dialogue, “International Coffee Day” Conversation: Enhancing Trade and Sustainability Between Indonesia and Australia, on 14 November at the Four Points Hotel in Makassar. The gathering focused on promoting sustainable coffee practices and strengthening trade relations between Indonesia and Australia.
The event brought together alumni and coffee industry professionals for meaningful discussions. Dr Alex Stephans, Consul at the Australian Consulate-General in Makassar, opened the event with remarks highlighting the significance of Indonesia’s coffee industry, particularly within the South Sulawesi region, and its commitment to expanding trade relations with Australia.
Key moments included two dynamic panel discussions, an Indonesian coffee excellence showcase facilitated by Anomali Coffee, an alumni-owned coffee shop, and opportunities for networking and collaborations. The panel discussions featured notable contributions from alumni Andi Amar Ma'ruf Sulaiman, Chairman of HIPMI South Sulawesi, who shared insights on export readiness and value chains for sustainable growth, and Dr Muhammad Junaid, Co-lead of AIC Rapid Research from Hasanuddin University, who highlighted research-based insights of the coffee sector’s challenges and opportunities. Adding an international perspective, Dr Ben Mullen, Agricultural Development Practitioner and Griffith IDBU Associate shared his expertise on sustainable coffee practices.
The event also welcomed esteemed experts from the coffee industry who have made significant contributions to the sector. Tanri Fathky Dasril, an ICE Certified Sensory Judge and the owner of Umbra Coffee & Roastery, shared his experience in coffee production and sustainability, offering a local perspective on the challenges and opportunities faced by the Indonesian coffee industry. Samuel Karundeng, from PT Sulotco Jaya Abadi and a member of SCOPI, brought valuable insights into integrating sustainable practices in the supply chain. Additionally, Yolan Tirta, a respected coffee producer from Yolancoffeeid, discussed the importance of maintaining high-quality coffee production while emphasising sustainability and innovation within the industry.
These discussions were moderated by alumnus Putri Niswatun Hasanah Tuhelelu. The lively and engaging atmosphere allowed participants to explore diverse coffee profiles, learn high-quality brewing techniques, and reconnect with fellow alumni.
We look forward to hosting more events that foster shared knowledge, strengthen professional ties, and deepen the enduring friendship between Indonesia and Australia.
