Workshop on Nutrition of 1000 days of Life for Mothers in Lombok Timur

Project Rationale:
The need for nutrition during the first 1,000 days of a child’s life plays a very crucial role in their growth and development. Lack of nutrition will impact children’s lives significantly and leads them to stunting. According to UNESCO, stunting clearly reflects chronic under-nutrition during the most critical periods of growth and development in early life. More dramatically, it is reported that almost 9 million children in Indonesia were stunted (according to the National Health Survey in 2017) or 36.4 percent. Since then, government of Indonesia has declared a fight against stunting because children under five are a reflection of Indonesia’s future. The Government of Indonesia has launched human development workers or heath community development workers supported by World Bank in its program dealing with stunting throughout Indonesia. However, some issues in terms of the limit of health development workers in remote areas seem to be a problem. The result has been that the stunting rate until now is still considered to be high. Take West Nusa Tenggara province as an example. In 2018, the Health Department in West Nusa Tenggara reported the percentage of stunting had reached 33.5 percent which is considered higher than national average percentage. The worst case occured in East Lombok district. Some factors in stunting include sanitation, dietary variety, breastfeeding and others. However, the factor of nutrition is believed to be the most crucial factor in the causes of stunting.

The direct beneficiaries are 50 mothers in East Lombok District.
