Sydney commencing students focus on professional linkages

Australia Awards students from Indonesia and Papua New Guinea participated in a Workshop in Sydney on 26 August 2017 focusing upon Professional Linkages.  For the students who had most commenced studies in Australia in Semester 2, 2017, the Workshop was designed to help students understand how to establish a professional profile in Australia and how to go about establishing a professional network.  The Workshop facilitated by Natasha Munasinghe from the Sydney-based Frank Team, provided participants with lots of practical exercises focusing upon professional profiling, a favourite amongst students being an opportunity to develop a 30 second elevator pitch for use in networking situations and to preview this pitch from a recording made on their mobile telephone.  The importance of social media and in particular professional profiling through LinkedIn was also discussed by Natasha who urged all participants to ensure that student’s profiles were up to date and written in English for use when applying for volunteer, internship or paid employment opportunities.  Through a range of group activities, video presentations from experts on business networking and lots of questions and answers, the Workshop was highly appreciated by all with  comments such as ‘we wanted it to be longer’ and  ‘this content was so useful’ typical of those received over lunch that followed.  The Professional Linkages Workshops have been piloted in NSW in 2017 with a view to rolling this activity out to commencing students in other states in 2018.
