Project Rationale:

In Aceh Province, people with disabilities find difficulties to access and have jobs. This is due to the fact that the government provide less attention against these people. This has caused people with disabilities to live in difficult conditions as the results, many of them become beggars on the road. Meanwhile, the Aceh Social Service (2015) noted that there are currently around 64,000 people with disabilities in Aceh.

In addition, the city of Banda Aceh and Aceh Besar District has a commitment to promote sustainable waste management. Since 2009, the government has implemented a recycling program for plastic waste that has opened up employment opportunities for the community. With the development of recycling activities, the informal sector is also engaged in developing this business for the surrounding community. Unfortunately, the program has not involved and provided opportunities for person with disabilities.

Therefore, the plastic waste management sector for crafts as one of the housing industries or home industries is an important opportunity for persons with disabilities in the city of Banda Aceh and the large Aceh Regency. This program will provide opportunities for persons with disabilities to work and earn income independently.

Project Description:

The proposed project is a pilot project that utilizing and turning materials like waste plastic, paper and used cloth into crafts and other simple products. Through this project, Aceh's Children and Youth Disability for Change (CYDC) will help people with disabilities to improve their skills, welfare and economy by selling the product. Some considerations are applying in planning this project, such as:

  • Persons with disabilities can independently do the work at homes (supervised by a CYDC team).
  • Raw materials are easy to obtain and it is costless, therefore, this is very possible.
  • The existence of market acceptance is potential for this business to develop and advance.

In addition, this project also supports government program i.e. to reduce plastic waste which can damage the environment. This project will also reduce unemployment (as expected by the government).
In its implementation, CYDC Aceh will increase the capacity of 6 groups consisting of 60 people with disabilities (30 people in Banda Aceh City and 30 people in Aceh Besar District). It is hoped that they can creatively reuse and turn the waste/plastics into handicraft product and be a small-medium business (UKM) enterprises. Therefore, this project will have a long-term and sustainable impact.
