Capacity Building for Resilient Destination and Sustainable Tourism Product Post COVID-19 in Hubang Hasundutan, Lake Toba

Project Rationale:
Lake Toba is the world’s largest volcanic lake, formed due to a massive super volcanic eruption that happened about 77,000 years ago. Its rich natural beauty, cultural and geological assets are considered by the travel trade as a world-class attraction and it has been recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark. Therefore, the national government has started to bring Lake Toba into the spotlight and listed it as one of the 5 super-priority tourism destinationa. Tourism was expected to be the new key driver for economic development of the region before the COVID-19 crisis.
While attention continues to grow in tourism infrastructure development, there is still very limited focus on generating sufficient manpower to meet the needs of the tourism industry, especially around Toba Caldera Geopark areas where major tourism infrastructure development is taking place. On several encounters with local stakeholders and communities around Toba Caldera Geopark areas, a severe gap between human resources in line with access to knowledge and the immense tourism potential of the region can clearly be seen.
The local ecosystem of tourism stakeholders and communities are not well prepared to face the massive developments as well as new future tourists’ preferences in the post-pandemic, for example, increasing demand for sustainable and safe tourism products. In order to respond to those challenges, capacity building and mentorship in sustainable tourism and destination management will give opportunities for the local communities and stakeholders to actively participate in the tourism development of the region.

- 10 government officials from tourism department
- 20 individuals (women, youth and people with special needs are prioritised) from Baktiraja communities
