The Australian Consulate-General in Surabaya recently hosted a "Buka Puasa with Australian Alumni" event at the Grand Mercure Hotel in Malang. This gathering, held on 14 March 2024, commemorated the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Australia and Indonesia.
This breakfasting event, attended by 81 alumni, marked the beginning of a series of Ramadan gatherings planned by the Consulate-General across East Java and Central Java, including Malang, Semarang, Solo, and Surabaya, throughout March and April. It provides a valuable platform for alumni, particularly those from the two provinces, and guests to connect among themselves and with representatives from the Australian Consulate-General.
The event started with opening remarks by Ms Fiona Hoggart, Australia's Consul-General in Surabaya. She underscored the consulate's commitment to fostering deeper engagement with Australian alumni and recognised their pivotal role in nurturing the enduring Australia-Indonesia relationship. "The Australian Consulate-General has a keen interest in deepening our engagement with all alumni of Australian education, fostering a strong network that contributes to the ongoing success of the Australia-Indonesia relationship," she emphasised, setting the tone for an evening filled with cultural exchange and celebration.
Esteemed Australian alumnus Prof Dr H Maskuri, the Rector of Universitas Islam Malang (UNISMA), delivered religious reflections (kultum), adding a touch of spiritual depth to the proceedings. Adding a touch of cultural exchange, SDK Cor Jesu Malang students participating in the BRIDGE School program took centre stage. Their delightful performance of the Australian nursery rhyme "The Kookaburra Song" intertwined with the Indonesian children's song "Motor Motor Motor Cilik " captured the audience's hearts, bridging cultures and generations with music and harmony.
The evening buzzed with warmth and vibrancy as alumni mingled, renewing old ties and making new connections. Amidst lively conversations, guests savoured delicious food and drink. A highlight was the photo booth, which captured cherished moments and served as tangible memories of the festivities. This gathering showcased the enduring spirit of collaboration, highlighting alumni's vital role in strengthening ties between Australia and Indonesia.
