How can we ensure that the relocation of communities affected by climate change is both just and effective? Join us for an insightful online lecture, “A Justice-Based Approach to Climate and Disaster-Related Relocation,” by Dr Annah Piggott-McKellar, on Friday, 18 October 2024, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Jakarta time).
Planned relocation of communities and households away from climate- and disaster-prone areas is a vital strategy for climate adaptation and disaster risk reduction. While this approach is increasingly used, it can lead to significant challenges for affected populations, disrupting livelihoods, social networks, and place attachment. Dr Piggott-McKellar will discuss the necessity of a justice-based framework that examines various dimensions of justice—procedural, deliberative, social, distributional, epistemic, and international—throughout the relocation process, from initial decision-making to long-term outcomes. This exploration will provide essential insights for governments to implement people-centred relocation strategies and mitigate adverse effects on vulnerable communities.
Graduates and scholars of Australian tertiary institutions from Indonesia interested in attending this event, particularly those passionate about climate justice, disaster risk reduction, and community resilience, are encouraged to RSVP by Wednesday, 16 October, using this link. As a token of appreciation for your participation, attendees will receive an e-certificate.
