Currently, there is no way to monitor volcanic activities such as toxic gases and seismic that uses a real-time data, portable and made result publicly available. The previous prototype has a capability to detects volcanic gasses CO2/CO only. However, seismic activity before volcano eruption that leads to earthquake also very important to be monitored.
The geography of Indonesia is dominated by volcanoes that are formed due to subduction zones between the Eurasian plate and the Indo-Australian plate. Volcanoes in Indonesia are part of the Paciﬁc Ring of Fire. The most active volcanoes are Kelud and Merapi on Java Island which has been responsible for thousands of deaths in the region. These volcanoes are continuously monitored from volcano observatories. The monitoring methods currently being used are visual and seismic observation. Visual observations are continuously carried out on the active volcanoes. The visual observation consists of volcano attitude, blazer
sound, temperature measurement, lava dome growth and environment condition. On the other hand in seismic observation utilizes mechanic, electromagnetic seismometers, and Radio Tele-seismic System. These equipment are installed at each volcano which has volcano observatory to monitor its activities. However, the observation monitoring method remains conventional and requires an advanced monitoring technology. By far the installed device cannot detect the presence of volcanic gases and its activities in the active volcano thus potentially hazardous to people, animals, and agriculture. Moreover, there is no early warning system unless the authority announced the status of the volcano.
From above description, it can be seen that this project is relevant and able to solve the problem by providing Smart Monitoring Application for Volcanoes based on Internet of Thing. The public will able to monitor the latest or current status of toxic gas in the volcano through their mobile phone/internet. In addition, this project will develop a further previous prototype by adding more sensors such as seismic activity and temperature measurement to mitigate other threats including potentially deadly landslides or earthquake that can be triggered by volcanic eruptions.
The project provides real-time information to observation monitoring oﬃce about the volcano activities that hazardous to people who live near to active volcano. The result of the project could signiﬁcantly help Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Republic of Indonesia to mitigate the impact of volcano eruptions. In addition, the direct beneficiaries are 7 lecturers who participate in the project activities also student wo attend knowledge sharing session.
