Australia Awards in Indonesia, in collaboration with the Collaboration for Knowledge, Innovation, and Technology Australia and Indonesia (KONEKSI), has concluded the Australia Awards Short Course on ‘Promoting Inclusive Leadership in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM)’ with a post-course workshop on 16–17 September in Jakarta.
Over the past six months, 25 Indonesian STEM professionals embarked on a journey that began with a pre-course workshop in May, continued with immersive sessions in Brisbane and Canberra in June, and culminated in this final workshop.
The event opened with remarks by Tim Stapleton, Minister Counsellor for Governance and Human Development at the Australian Embassy in Jakarta, and Nur Tri Aries Suestiningtyas, Executive Secretary of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), followed by a keynote speech from Amalia Adininggar Widyasanti, Head of Indonesia Bureau of Statistics (BPS). Speakers included Prof Yuli Rahmawati, Education Attaché at the Embassy of Indonesia in Canberra; Dr Dorita Setiawan, Director of STEM Indonesia Cerdas; and Dr Stephanie Riady, Executive Director of Pelita Harapan Group. They shared perspectives on embedding inclusivity in STEM and strengthening collaboration across government, academia and industry.
Participants also presented Award Projects and a joint policy brief, showcasing how inclusive leadership can translate into policies, programs, and innovations that strengthen Indonesia’s STEM ecosystem.
As participant Dwi Ariyanti shared, ‘I had a wonderful experience participating in this short course. I gained new perspectives on inclusive leadership, effective communication, and strategic thinking within the STEM field. The institutional visits allowed me to observe best practices and innovative approaches.’
Delivered by The University of Queensland, the short course equipped participants with the tools to apply inclusive leadership, strengthen collaboration and drive innovation in research, education and policy, shaping a more inclusive and dynamic STEM ecosystem for Indonesia’s future.
